description: “A two thousand year old seed was discovered in the excavations of a king’s palace, it was later planted and sprouted”
Did Alexander the Great discover the fruit of life during his world domination?
On a guided tour of the ancient conquered lands of Alexander the Great we had arrived at the location of the battle of “The Persian gate” just north east of Yasuj in Iran. This had been where the great Alexander and his army were once outnumbered and held for one whole month by the Persian army. Under temporary siege, their provisions were running low which was a cause for doubt for some of his men who questioned whether they would be able to make it or not. The feeling of doubt subsided, however, the moment a discovery of a delicate fruit was made which provided them with the energy and strength to persevere. Alexander then managed to outmanoeuvre the Persians by finding a path to the rear, which eventually led to his victory.
Our guide was now directing us towards a nearby farm and all I could see were acres of green palm trees with strange kinds of beehive-shaped fruits hanging from them. The guide pointed to one of these strange looking beehives “ does anybody know what this is?`” he asked. “This was Alexander the great’s secret weapon, these right here are dates” he informed us.
I later found out that dates became Alexander’s snack of choice from that point onward. He noticed that apart from being delicious they also gave him and his troops incredible strength and energy, which was so important in marching them on towards the largest conquest the world has ever seen.
“A two thousand year old seed was discovered in the excavations of a king’s palace, it was later planted and sprouted” reported a culinary historian, which just goes to show the incredible vitality contained within the seeds that bear these fruits.
No wonder they’re called fruits of paradise. When you find out how good they are for you, you’ll understand. Only eating a handful of dates a day contains incredible amounts of nutrients, minerals and sugars that nourish the body immensely. You won’t believe what this incredible fruit offers.
They’re an excellent source of iron, and iron being the component of haemoglobin inside red blood cells determines the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood.
They also contain good amounts of potassium, which is an important component of cell and body fluids that help control heart rate and blood pressure. Potassium offers protection against stroke and coronary heart disease.
They contain a high amount of minerals such as calcium, manganese, copper and magnesium. Calcium is an important mineral that is an essential constituent of bones and teeth, and it’s also required by the body for muscle contraction, blood clotting and nerve impulse conduction. Manganese is important for nerve and brain function. Copper is necessary for the production of red blood cells and magnesium is essential for bone growth.
In addition they also contain high amounts of B vitamins, which also help produce the production of red blood cells and energy.
The additional presence of vitamin K, which is essential in building strong bones finally topped it all off.
I was gob-smacked by the list of benefits these nutrients and minerals had. It now made sense why this is such a highly regarded fruit.
Over the years I had become impartial to dates because of their dry, hard and sticky texture, so I never bothered eating them anymore, but there was something different about the dates on this particular farm. They didn’t seem so dry and it was the first time I’d seen what a fresh date looked like. I picked one from the tree and looked closer. The sweetness of the date was oozing through the skin, which made it soft and moist. I placed it in my mouth and bit through the paper-thin skin of the date to the juicy sweetness of the flesh beneath and in an instant my life changed. How had I never tasted fresh dates before and now it made sense why Alexander the Great was so entranced by these fresh delicious dates. A mixture of natural caramel and toffee is the only way I can describe these dreams from nature.
In their fresh form, dates truly are fit for kings. If you’re interested in trying some of these delicious, fresh Iranian dates so that you too can experience the same vitality, you can order these delicious treats right here with us and introduce a taste of sunshine into your life.
